Tom Caxton, as far as I recall might have been the first home brew kit maker in the UK. I clearly remember buying a kit that looked exactly like the one pictured on the left. I bought the kit in Boots Chemist when I was about 14years old and made it in my bedroom using a plastic rubbish bin and a plastic bag liner. After the fermentation was complete we put the ale into empty lemonade bottles and stored them in my friend’s parents garage. I recall most of the bottles exploded after a few days.

Tom Caxton still produces beer kits today. They’re all 1.8kg single can kits that require additional brewing sugar or malt. Tom Caxton is one of the most famous brands and products are usually available though high street outlets such as Wilkos.
