Woodforde’s NOG

We opened this barrel just before Christmas 2012 and have been astounded by the rich liquorish and spicy flavours. There’s a slightly sweet flavour and nutty aroma which disguise the hoppy bitterness that hits you once you've had the ale in your mouth for a little. The distinct mix of bitterness and sweeter flavours is really quite special.

Every one of our friends who has tasted this ale has been gushing in their praise. My friend Tim, who has always been a Guinness and porter drinker, exclaimed loudly after one sip "now you're speaking my language!" and went on to drink many pints throughout the day.

Although I give this ale a high rating on account of its popularity with my visitors over the Christmas holiday, I don’t personally think I’ll be racing to brew another very quickly. After the celebrations were over I was left with a third of a barrel which lingered on for weeks un-drunk. Although I like this ale I do not favour it over lighter beers such as Woodfordes Wherry, it is just a little too rich for me.
